WEAVALIOUS

Yes baby doll ya girl is now rocking a weave. About a year ago that was not a possibility for me. My how time and pressure changes things. My guy hates my natural hair. I am surprised he has not given me a relaxer in my sleep. But he really hated the bald fade so he will take the nappy over no hair at all. Then there is the whole thing I deal with about not feeling sexy or cute with a bunch of short nappy hair. My hair is very course, super dry, insanely thick, zig zag curl pattern and surprisingly really fragile. My hair breaks very easily. My hair is so thick that getting a comb through it when it is dry is only asking for trouble. Actually I don’t know what I am going to do when it grows out. It will be so much hair it will be hard to tame. But I think next summer I’m going back to a low hair cut… not a bald fade but a low cut.

Presently I am feeling this weave. It is from All About My Hair and it is kinky curly (kc) this hair is much nicer than my real hair but it is as close as I’m going to get . My hair actually blends well and the look is very much me. The hair is soft to the touch and love moisture just like my real hair. This is my first sew in weave and the first two days were difficult. The guy sew the hair in tight. The braids were not tight but once he put the thread and hair on it was very tight. It felt like I had a head full of braids. After two days the pain went away but the itching started. Wow the itching was no puck. I was scratching my head every two seconds. Some braid spray with tea tree oil seemed to soothe the scalp a little bit. Then the itching started again and I took a pen cap and started scratching in between the parts. My research indicates that this is not uncommon for sew in weaves. I was told to rub some sea breeze on my scalp, trust me I will. This itching is crazy, I never knew this was one of the side effects of sew ins. So two days of pain and two days of itching. I was told once the weave get a bit more loosened that the itching will stop.

If this does not stop I will be forced to take it out. I cant tolerate all this damn itching too much longer!

Weaving It to Achieve It

This natural hair journey is a lot different that when I had locs. For me I was okay rocking my short locs…yes I looked like a scared chicken for a while. However, it was part of the process and people could look and my hair and tell I was attempting to loc. But just wearing my natural loc free hair has been difficult at times. I have said it many times I do not like the way short nappy hair looks on me. Not that it has to be polished it just looks… I don’t know ugly. But on most other naturalistas it looks great!

Well at this moment I’ve decided that I will wear braids or some form of weave until my hair grows out a little more. I have about 4 ½ inches of hair but it shrinks down to about 2 inches. If I’m honest I will admit that my man may have played a part in my hair insecurities. What can I say the man does not like my nappy hair. He would prefer it straight but I refuse to put a relaxer in and he was tired of the braided styles so I have opted towards something that has braids and hair as well. What is with some men addition to “europeanish” hair on black women?

Protective Styling

Hello Everyone,

I know I have been out of touch for awhile……….sorry. My hair is still doing its own thang. This journey is quite different than my loc journey. I absolutely cannot stand the way a TWA looks on me. My hair is about 4 inches long and it seems too long for twist but too short for anything else. So in the mean time I have been wearing braids and weave. I don’t necessarily care for the weave but it helps me look decent while my lovely natural hair grows out. Here are a few of the styles I have been rocking.

Mo Hair...Mo Problems

My hair is growing really fast, but that is not always a good thing. I still have not found a moisturizer that works 100% of the time all the time. My hair is thick and is super course... when it is dry it feels like wool. I fight with my hair all the time. Recently I got so mad at my hair and tired of it feeling like a dry matted piece of wool that I almost thought about a relaxer. Instead I went to the African braid shop and paid 200.00 for them to braid my hair. I hate spending the type of money on my hair but I was really tired of twisting it and the fro was just not appealing to me anymore. Prior to the braids I went to a "natural" hair shop and let them do a lil sumpting sumpting to my hair but it cost 95.00! WTF is up with the natural hair spots charging so damn much money! I thought the whole point of going natural...........at least for me was saving on the cost of doing my hair. I spending money on my nappy head like it is growing on trees. Damn I may be going to the barber again... but that man of mine will be too pissed. He barely survived the first time!

I just wish people quit taking advantage of the natural hair movement. I can see if I had 8-15 inches of thick coily hair that really needed all hands on deck. Shoot I got a solid 4 inches of hair. Do I really need to give you 95.00 to twist it for me!

Nappy Hair + Vain Man = PROBLEMS

Okay y’all I am having boyfriend issues. Basically he does not like my natural hair. Now he wont come straight out and admit it but he says little sly comments that make me feel like he really doesn’t care for it.
First of all he went ballistic when I cut it all off . He damn near hyper ventilated. He threatened to kill the barber and begged me to never put a pair of clippers next to my head. Then he went and purchased me all kinds of hats to wear. When I started cursing him out he said I was over reacting, he only purchased them because he thought they were cute. I called him a damn lie. Needless to say I have never worn any of the hats. And I will not… I’m trying to prove a point. At that time he said he was cool with the natural hair but not with the bald look.
He hates the fro and I can’t blame him, I’m not too crazy about the small fro either so we both agree on that. He kinda liked it when I had my hair in twist he said that was pretty a few times. So now my hair has grown and the comb twist seems to take too long (2.5 hours weekly). Now I two strand twist them.. like in the pictures above and he aint too crazy about that style. I told him I was gonna get my hair braided to help it grow plus I was tired of twisting it weekly.

Man he has been worrying the hell out of my about getting it braided. I told him that I like my natural hair and I understand because he is from Los Angles that he may think that long weaves and relaxed hair is more attractive. He swears I am flipping out and he just feels that my hair would do better in braids than the twist. Of course I am looking at him crossed eyed like yeah right. He says I am too sensitive about my hair. I told him I was not relaxing my hair nor would I be willing to wear a glued in or sowed in weave.

I have never fought with a man about hair before. Most men I dated really could care less about my hair style. As long as it was combed and decent looking there was no problems. He gonna have to get his mind right. I told him that I was not gonna argue with him about MY hair and there was nothing he can do about it. He says I am being dramatic and going flipping out. I just want him to know where I stand and I refuse to back down. But then again so does he!

Product Reviews and Growth Report

Right now I am loving my hair. My hair goes through stages, sometimes I love it, others time not so much. It is getting to the point where it is growing and the twist are actually standing up off my head. I love my hair to have height and depth. I can stand my hair to be too flat.

Right now I am using a few products that I absolutely love. The first one is Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter. I use this product to two strand twist my hair. It is thick as pudding and really moisturizes my kinky course tresses. Now the one down fall about this product is the color. It is white and takes awhile to dissipate into the hair. When I put the product into my hair it looks white for awhile. No matter how much you rub this product in your palms it will not change into a clear substance. I normally do my hair at night and in the morning the whiteness is completely gone.

Once completely twist my hair with the Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter. I seal the ends with Organix Coconut anti breakage serum. This is a great product and it really keep my ends from breaking off while strengthen my hair. I put this on my ends every three to four days at night when I tie my hair down.

For daily moisture I use Jamaican lime and mango locking gel. This product smells great and it is in a gel form. I use about a quarter size of this everyday on my twist. It makes my hair more pliable and supple. The second product is S Curl spray moisturizing activator. Yes, I know when haven’t seen this in awhile. But this stuff actually works. It also moisturizes my hair, makes it soft and adds sheen. The same thing it did for the curl…. It does for the natural hair as well.

My hair is super course and kinky and coily. It absolutely loves moisture and behaves best when it is completely and fully moisturized and shown love on a daily basis. If my hair does not have the proper moisture levels it will get really hard and break off easily.

The wonderful things about the above products is none of them cost more than $8.00 and can be found in Walgreens. I have tried so many of the more expensive products and they do not work on my hair type. So far these products are doing the job and my hair is growing.

Natural and Loving It

I am on another journey with my hair. My hair has personality. It is thick, dense, coily, resistant to most hair products, loves moisture and hates a lot of manipulation. Prior to going natural I knew none of this! Sometimes I love my hair sometimes I hate my hair. Yes, we have a love hate relationship. Now that I do not have locks I have to deal head on with lose nappy hair. On some levels the locks were easier to deal with. But I want to experience all forms of my natural hair. My hair is growing like a weed and that is mostly thanks to the twist.

Yes honey I have a lot of lil twist on my head. As my hair grows the twist get bigger and thicker. It takes my friend at least two hours to twist my entire head. But on the upside the twist last two weeks. I can"t wait for my hair to grow out a little more. I can't wait to try all the natural hair styles that require a lil length.

I still rock a fro. The fro is the quintessential natural hair style. It symbolizes strength and pure fierceness.

Wig or not to Wig .... That is the Question

Last Friday I had my mind set on purchasing a wig. I already kind of knew what I wanted the wig to look like and I must admit I was a little excited. The reason I wanted the wig was for a little diversity in my hair options. Right now I'm limited to the fro and the lil twisties. I was tired of both of those styles.

I go to the Wig Emporium... which is a huge wig warehouse. There were hundreds of wigs everywhere. There were long wigs, short wigs, curly wigs, straight wigs, nappy wigs, lace front wigs. It was almost product over load.

I looked and I looked and finally decided on two wigs I could possibly live with. The lady sat me down put a wig cap on my head and placed the wig around my skull. I looked in the mirror and felt fake. Plus the wig was super tight on my head felt like my scalp was being smothered slowly.

I kept looking and looking at myself in the mirror and did not feel like the wig was me. I have gotten so accustomed to wearing my authentic hair that wearing a wig felt foreign.

I was actually shocked I felt that way giving the fact that I used to be the wig and weave queen. Not to mention I longed to have long hair once I cut off my locks.
I kind of felt good about it. I snatched the wig off my head and told the lady no thanks.

Im against wigs maybe I can do braids.

A Lil Bit of Hair Goes A Long Way

My friend looked at my hair about a month ago and said..." I think I can twist your hair". I pulled at my lil hair and said, "girl do you think it's enough to twist"? She was confidant that she could get the job done. And BAM check the pic.

I have been getting my hair twisted for about a month now. I can honestly say the growth rate has sped up since I keep it twisted. But I still rock the fro. I will wear the fro for one week and wear the twist for three weeks. This way it gives me different ways to wear my hair.

I am growing to like both looks. Of course I can't wait to get some length but I am enjoying the journey..... just like I did with my locs.

People have been asking me if I would consider getting locs again. Of course I will consider it. Most likely I will do it again in the future I am just not sure when I will travel down that path again. I want to have a full experience with my natural hair so I want to wear it all kinds of ways before I go back to locks.

Looking Girlish

It's hard rocking a girlish look when you have a tiny wenny afro (TWA). I have been wearing makeup and big earrings trying to give myself a more feminine look. Well I found these head bands at Lane Bryant and I just had to have them. I know some of you may be saying girrrrl you need to grow some hair before start wearing head bands. But shoot I could not wait and I love flowers!

I did a little eye makeup and a lil lip gloss and I thought I was looking real fashion forward. My motto is do you. If it makes you feel good and you think you look good then I say go for it. Always go for what enhances you and make you feel better.

Beautiful Natural Beauties

To me nothing says pure beauty than a woman that is a natural beauty. A natural beauty loves herself and doesn't feel the need to wrap herself in insecurities. When she smiles she lights up a room, she just has a certain ummmp about her. Although a natural beauty doesn't have to wear her hair natural. But today I would like to highlight some of my favorite natural beauties.

This is one of my besties. Regina has been natural for about four years. She wore her hair in a short fade and then decided to grow it out. All that hair you see grew out in only two years! Doesn't she look lovely. She rocks her fro with style and class.

Next is me! I love my look. It is so natural and simple. I love it when it looks good but it is simple. I am in the process of growing out my fade. My goal is to let my hair grow as long and healthy as it possibly can grow. I am learning that my hair craves moisture and is very dense and course. Very.....course. Right now I am wearing a small fro but looking simply naturally marvelous.

Next up is Richelle. Richelle is my co-worker and a pure inspiration. Rarely do I catch Richelle in a bad mood and she has a smile that lights up our call center! Richelle did the big chop about 3 months ago and doesn't she look like she was meant to be a natural beauty. Richelle is very versatile with her hair, one day she may rock her fro the next she may two strand twist it. She is a diva.

This is Nikki my business partner in crime. We sit next to each other at work and we get the job done! Nikki has been natural for about 3 years. She wore braids to grow out her hair and slowly chopped the perm out until it was all gone. Nikki likes to wear her hair curly. She puts a little gel and conditioner with a little olive oil in her hair and it curls right on up. Nikki looks great with her natural hair. Her hair is healthy and very soft.

Product Review

Since I cut off my locks I am back to being a product junkie. I know I should know better but lets face it, what works with locked hair doesn't necessarily work the same with loose hair.

My hair is #4 and is very thick and tightly curled. The curl is S shaped and since it is short the curls are very close to my scalp. Of course I want to highlight the curls and I plan on trying products that will bring out the curliness in my course hair.

Currently I am using Carol's Daughter Hair Milk what is suppose to define curls. I am also using the Tui oil to keep my scalp moist.

The Tui Oil smells grrrrrrrrrrreat and I really like using it. I cant boast of any added benefits outside the smell. My scalp seems to like it as it is not flaky or anything. It's easy to get carried away with the oil, which I have several times. Oil be running down the side of my face..... reminiscent of my Jerri Curl days. It also works well as a hot oil treatment. This product is what I call a luxe product because the benefits can be achieved by purchasing some Hot Six oil found in the beauty supply store. Hell, or any oil of you prefer.

Now this moisturizer is suppose to define the curls in my hair. Well it is very thin and my thirsty hair will devour anything that is thinner than the consistency of yogurt. By itself my hair will be dry and brittle by 10am, so I often add leave in conditioner and a little spritz of water infused with the Tui oil. Once I do this my hair seems to be a little softer and the curls seem to be highlight. This product may work well for women with thinner hair or those with a little wave but it does nothing for me. I will not purchase this product again it was a total waste of money.

This shampoo smells good and my hair seems to feel very curly when I am in the shower. However it could be the water making it extra curly. Again this is a luxe item. In my opinion shampoo is for cleaning the scalp and the hair only. I've never met a shampoo that did any more than that. They may be out there but I have not experienced them. I would probably not purchase this product again either. Maybe once I try another shampoo I can compare the two and better determine if it was worth the money. But right now I am pretty sure that it doesn't help define the curls.

In the next week or so I have some Miss Jessie's products coming. I will review these products as well.

1st Stage of Growing Process

In 2007 when I first got my sisterlocks I looked like a scared chicken. I knew I looked semi crazy by the head but I convinced myself that it was only for a little while and in the end it would pay off. Yes..... it did pay off in the end, by the next year no one remember that I looked like a scared chicken by the head. I must admit it was a test of my self-esteem and I often made my self walk out the door. In all honesty I wanted to wear a wig so bad to hide the crazy looking locks. After going through that process I was sure my self-esteem was in tack and that my hair no longer defined me.

Fast forward 4 years and I decided to cut my sisterlocks off. In 2011 I was rocking a low fade look. In the photo above I thought I looked chic and sexy. My make up look amazing and my face really pops. This look actually made me feel empowered. I felt
like I was giving the world the middle finger by saying this is me to hell with you if you dont like it.

Now it is August 2011 and I have not had a hair cut in over a month. I decided that I wanted to grow my natural hair out to see how healthy and long I could grow it.
Let just tell you I feel just like I did during my scared chicken days. There are days that I get up and no matter what type of moisturizer or pudding I put in my head it still look like I need a hair cut really bad. This Friday was really hard for me. I was going out with my girl and I just did not feel pretty. The hair just looked a mess to me. I put on my make up and glossed my lips but my head still looked unkempt to me. I thought I conquered this hair thing.....but I haven't. I will continue to update you on the progress of my hair.

Growing my hair is going to be a journey similar to growing my locks. There will be good days bad days and ugly days. But like the locks in the end it will be worth it.

Notice the name change?

I've changed the name of my blog and that could only mean one thing. You guessed I no longer have my sisterlocks. A moment of silence please! Yes the sisterlocks are gone and I am starting over from scratch.

I cut them off out of frustration and anger. Many of them and fallen out. I really dont know the reason why they fell out they just did. I have a few theorys but nothing solid. But what I did notice is they all fell out around the hair line. The locks were really small around the hair line and was held together by a small amount of hair. Trust and believe this was not an easy decision but I felt it was the best decision for me. I had installed 17 new locks and the other day I lost another 3 it seemed like I was fighting an uphill battle and I was on the losing end of the battle. I was missing over 30 locks and it was getting very hard to hide the fact that a cluster of locks were missing in a single area. I was doing a lot of updos but that was putting more stress on the locks around the hair line and it was starting to hurt. If I was not rocking an updo I had at least 7 hair pins in my hair to keep the missing locks from showing. It was starting to feel like a contraption instead of my beautiful locks.

Then there was the fear of looking crazy. I was scared of looking too hard if I shaved off my locks. I wanted to keep in sexy and feminine and I was afraid of all the questions I would get. I hesitated for about a week. Then my co-worker ( a man by the way) inspired to do what was best for me and what was in my heart to do. So Thursday night I ran home and grabbed a pair of scissors and cut out a chunck of my locks. Once I started cutting I could not stop. Then I looked in the mirror and saw what looked like a bald chicken. I looked at my locks in a heap on the bathroom floor and felt bad for about 3 minutes. I jumped in the shower and washed my remaining hair. OMG it was almost orgasmic.....feeling the hot water hit my scalp directly felt soooooo good. I forgot I good it felt to have water hit your head like that. I only used a dime size of shampoo and my head had leather for days! The next morning I went to the barber and she hooked me right up. I felt like a sex kitten when she was done. I also looked younger! The journey of my locks taught me that I am beautiful with or without hair. Because the begining months of sisterlocks was not easy either... it didnt look good to me until after about 8 months. But it made me find the real beauty in me instead of looking for my hair to hold all my beauty. I will rock this low fade until August then I will start growning my hair back out.

My plan is to grow my hair and rock it loose for awhile and if the spirit moves me I might lock it again. I doubt I will do sisterlocks because they were just a little to small. I may do brother locks or traditional locks. What I know for sure is that I will be natural going forward. I will continue to blog about my journey and my experience with my hair so stay turned.

Just Because

I know I have not posted full pics of my head lately. Judging by my recent description of my hair situation many may think I look a hot mess by the head daily. Well … I used to but know I can disguise the problem areas a little bit more. Here are a few pics of me with an updo……… BTW excuse the messy bathroom the lighting is just a little bit better in there!

Come To Jesus Moment

Hey Everybody,

My locks are finally taking a turn for the better. About six months ago I decided to start DIY’ing my locks. There were many challenges; a few of my locks were knotted up because I did not pull the lock through the hole tight enough. I was scarred to handle my locks too aggressively at the time. Then there was the issue of thinning locks. More than a few of my locks were very thin at the root. I am still not sure who to blame on this one. My consultant retighten my hair with a crochet hook, which could have pulled out too many hairs at the base. I did not notice this problem until I started DIY’ing. At first I was just very careful when I did my reti but then some of them got so thin they were hanging on to 3-4 hairs. Eventually a few came out at the root (white ball still attached to hair). I had about 6 locks just come straight out my head, creating bald spots.

I had between 25 and 30 weak locks, most were so weak they could not be combined because any manipulation would cause them to break directly from the scalp. So I decided to cut the weak locks off, this was a dramatic step. I have over 400 locks so removing 25 to 30 seemed like a breeze. Well it was not! I had missing locks all over my head! My hair looked a mess, I had about ½ inch of loose hair in various places of my head. I was missing at least 8 locks right at the front of my hair line, 7 at the very top, 4 each on the left and right side of the head and about 6 at the nape of my neck. My hair broke off badly at the hairlines because the roots of the locks were so thin in at area and the locks were hanging on by a thread.

I was really upset and thought about removing my locks and starting over. I didn’t know if I should be mad at my consultant or mad at myself for letting this happen. Then I watch a YouTube video from Necoleisthenewblack and she was discussing her locking journey, she basically said she DIYs and make many mistakes but it is apart of the journey. This inspired me to keep my locks and just wait it out.

In the meantime I started back using Carol’s Daughter products because I needed my hair to grow asap. Then I began to twist all the short loose hairs and pinning them down out of the way. It had the appearance that they were locked and it didn’t look so crazy anymore.

Finally after 3 ½ months the hair was finally long enough to lock. Last week I put 17 new baby locks in my head. The new locks are mostly in the top of my head, the hair lining and the nape. You read right I put the locks in myself with the nappy lock tool. I was very proud of myself. I am totally self reliant with my locks, I do have access to a consultant if I need assistance.

Let me just say this has not been an easy journey and there has defiantly been some mountain top and valley moments. I am still waiting on some sections to grow out so I can lock them, I suspect the ones that fell out at the root may not be ready until the end of the year or the beginning of next year. But I am now a master at making a bad hair day look good. My friend Gina is good a braiding my locks to hide unsightly areas. I was a little upset because there was not a lot of documentation online to discuss the issues I was having with my locks. Of course there were many singing the praises of sisterlocks but non addressing detrimental issues. What I will say is if you are having problems with your locks please don’t get discouraged… consult a knowledgeable locktian or consultant… but remember you may have to take drastic measures and do be afraid of that. Each of our journeys is different and bad things are to be expected. Below is a pic of two of my new babies on the hairline

Hair Changes

I finally found someone to help me with my hair. I am still going to be a DIY’er but I have chosen to have a certified consultant troubleshoot some of the problem areas for me. For example I have a more than a few locks that have either broken off at the root or are hanging on by a thin piece of hair. For those that are barely hanging on I may decide to cut them off and start a new lock, cuz it I try to tighten it will surely break off at the root. Again I am not sure how so many locks thinned out, they were doing just fine then BAM! I am tempted to blame my former consultant but honestly I just do not know if that is true. Some have said I retighten the lock too much, but that is simply not true, when I started DIYing I found some locks were very thin at the root to begin with. Those thin locks that I did retighten broke off the next time I tried to retighten them again. Part of me is pissed off… but another part says hey it’s just hair.. chill out! I am learning how my hair grows, what it can tolerate and what makes it angry. I am having some trouble getting all the loose hairs around my front lining to go into the lock. My new consultant will be helping with that as well as fixing some holes in my locks. I have been going through the same hole while doing reti’s and this has caused some problems…nothing that can not be fixed. I just found out that it is not as simple as doing the 4 point rotation; you can not do horizontal latching one after another. For example if I do a latch going south, the next latch can not be going north. You must go north, east, south west… in other words….horizontal, vertical, and horizontal, vertical. This will prevent holes in the lock. All the tutorials on YouTube forgot to mention that important detail! But as Mc Hammer would say…It’s All Good. What I know for certain is whatever happens I am not putting the creamy crack back in my head.

Thinning Lock........Help

I am having a really bad problem. Last month I started doing my own reti’s. I noticed that some of my locks were very thin at the base. For the ones that were extremely thin I combined them with the loc next to it. I left some alone and just did the reti. Now this weekend I did the reti and lost about 6 locks. Three literally fell out in my hand and left bald spots. I use the nappy loc tool so I am sure that it is not cutting hairs at the root as a reti. However, my consultant uses the hooking latch. I am just not sure if this is normal or not. To my knowledge this has never happened before, but I can not be 100% sure because I was not doing my own hair prior to last month. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

First let me say that I am taking HCG as a way to lose weight. HCG is a hormone that is produced in pregnant women. When used in a homeopathic way it is a great way to jump start your metabolism. I am at a point in my health were I MUST lose weight, it’s not an option and I am only on HCG for 40 days. It is working wonderfully and the weight is finally coming off. I have only been taking HCG for two weeks.

I did some online research and it seems that pregnant women have thinning locks and part of me thinks that the thinning locks an HCG are correlated. However, if you read my previous post you will see where I have had problems in the past with thinning locks. Given the fact that I now have three bald spots in my head I am slightly alarmed.

Is this normal? I do have small locks but there are some that would be considered micro locks. These “micro locks” are the ones that are thinning at the root. There are so many factors that could have caused this to happen. I am in school trying to obtain my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering while working full time. Needless to say the classes are hella hard and I am hella stressed.

There were also times in the past when I wondered why my consultant let my locks get so thin without combining them. What I am trying to convey is there is a multiple reasons why locks could be thinning at the root. I just want it to stop! Lately my hair has been dry and brittle. My scalp has been flakey and dry as well. With that in mind I decided to part with my cash and get my hair a little a treat. I headed to Sephora and purchased some Carol’s Daughter Tui hair shampoo and smoothie conditioner, healthy hair butter and some tui leave in conditioner. I left the conditioner in my head overnight and my hair loved it. I rinsed out the conditioner in the morning and it was like someone did CPR on my hair! I am trying to drink more water, keep stress at bay and stay on top of my hair maintenance. I noticed some peach fuzz hair growing back in one of the bald spots so hopefully we can start a baby lock soon.

It’s Official

I am officially a diy’er

Let me be the first to say it was not easy. There was some knotting, some joining together and even a few casualties but I did not give up and I finally finished. I used the nappy lock tool . This thing is so easy to use you would have to be just against diy not to like this tool. I do have a small complaint…. I would like the tool to bit a little bit, tizzy wit longer. The straight end is great fro untangling but it would work better if it was longer.

One of the first hurdles was separating the locks enough to make sure that they would not be joined. Initially this was very hard, no matter how I tried it seemed like I married the a loc with another loc. It was becoming very aggravating and at one point I thought I would have a head full of two headed dragons. The next hurdle was time. Y’all it literally took me three weekends to finish my entire head. I am too busy during the week so the only time I have to attack my head is on the weekends. I split the hair into fourths and it took me 4 hours just to do the front right side. Then when I attempted to do the left front side it took 2 hours, basically the more I did not the shorter the time span. Eventually the knots started to decrease and the marrying of locs was happening less often. My arm and neck would hurt like hell so I could only do it in 30 minute intervals. I was clipping some small stray hairs off of one and accidently cut it off! But I used a remedy saw on Maryee’s blog. I took a needle and black thread and sewed it back on. It really worked, I just reattached it to the part of the lock that was still on my head. At first I was really concerned because I could not see the parts. But then I remembered what when I first got my SL I could not see the parts either. I have very thick hair and the parts are not always visible. I do need to work around the hair line get those stray hairs but its all good!

Speaking of stray hairs I need to learn how to include the them into the loc. Because I waited so long to retighten my ends there was a great deal of stray hairs. I also noticed where some of the locks were only holding on to few hairs so those had to be joined. I also need to learn how to style my hair. I pretty much wear the same style over and over again, which can be boring. I also realized that I had slacked off taking care of my hair. I just took advantage of the locs and did not pamper my hair like I did when I had a relaxer. I now understand natural does not mean unkempt, it’s still hair and still requires attention.

My hair and scalp was extremely dry and thirsty. I’ve heard that the scalp produce natural oil….well that is not the case for me. I had to soak my scalp and hair with conditioner and olive oil for a few hours. This lead to my hair feeling softer and more touchable. I also have to make sure that I mist my hair every morning because my locs really love moisture. My hair is not at it’s healthiest right now and I am making it a point to get my hair completely healthy.

There was some up and downs and it may not look as well as when my consultant did it, but I am glad I did my OWN hair. I am certain I will get better at it the more I do it. I am making it a goal to learn as much about my hair as possible. If I go to the shop it will be on my own terms. Here a few pics of my hair. I used pipe cleaners to get the curl! Chile the sun was shining this morning

DYI'ing My Sisterlocks

I am not sure that I will be able to call my sisterlocks….sisterlocks after this weekend. Some sisterlock enthusiasts believe that if you don’t use the sisterlock tool and you are not using (or not) a certified sisterlock consultant then you don’t have sisterlocks.

I know this is what Dr. Jo and the home office promote, but I don’t necessarily agree. I know the purpose behind that thinking is brand driven, and money motivated. Get people to believe that they have a superior product and add a high price to it, and then viola people think they are in an exclusive club.

One of the reasons I was attracted to sisterlocks was because it allowed me to lock and still have a small amount of permed ends. It was never about the brand, it was more about the method. However, had I done the proper research I would have found out that braidlocs and nappylocks would have offered me the same results. If I had known that I may have went the cheaper route. Nevertheless, I do not regret getting sisterlocks, they are beautiful and very versatile.

Sisterlocks are one of the best things that ever happened to my hair. However, the cost of maintenance has really put a strain on my pocketbook. The point of going natural was to get in tune with my natural hair and to lessen the cost of hair maintenance. Honestly, I did not accomplish any of those goals. I was not in tune with my natural hair because I rarely paid attention to it. I left that up to my consultant, I felt she was getting paid to notice changes in my hair and solve any hair dilemmas I may have had. Any y’all already know how a feel about the cost.

Well this is about the third time my consultant has went MIA on me and quite frankly I am sick of it. I don’t feel like I should have to plead, search and wait to PAY someone to do my hair. I understand that things beyond our control happen, but can’t this be communicated? Leaving a message on the voice mail , stating that you are out of the office is simply good business….right. Well, whatever!

Yesterday I started the DYI process. I retighten (reti) about 9 locks. I had a little knotting and I found out I was looping through the same hole. I even to get a few knots out. But for the most part it went smoothly. I found that some locks have very thin roots. I know that some of my locks will be combined to strengthen the root bed. I was upset to find that my consultant continued to latch locks that had thinning roots. Some locks will be combined with purpose and I am positive some will be combined on accident. It is very hard to see what is going on in the back of your head. I will try my best to keep the locks separate. However, my locks are very close to one another and keeping the neighboring lock out of rotation can be hard at times. I am using the 4 point rotation. Hopefully I can finish my entire head this weekend. I will document the process and tell you how I did it, any mistakes I make and if it was all worth it in the end.

I will be using the nappylock tool as well as the latchhook. Keep me lifted up in prayers this weekend. I am determined to do this and be responsible for my own hair. Maybe once I figure it our I will take a reti class so I can offer my services to other sistahs who do not want to pay ridicules prices to have their hair maintained
